I never quite know how to rate restaurants using Yelp's star system. As I decided on four stars, I realized I've also given State and Lemp four stars. Hmmm. Anyway, in the category of quick, eat-in or take-out barbecue restaurants, I give Dickey's four stars. I said to my husband when we left that Dickey's exceeded my expectations. Although the employees very awkwardly knew almost nothing about their menu, the giant potato with pulled pork that I ordered was great. The ingredients were a little too clumped together rather than spread evenly on the potato, but it was not too difficult to rearrange. I'm planning to enjoy it again for dinner tonight--Hubs and I might split one next time. His brisket was good, but a little dry. I liked the yellow cups you can take with you (of course I unintentionally threw mine away). Hubs said their sweet tea was good and he's pretty picky about sweet tea. The free ice cream is unique and fun.

I have to say...I DO love the Dickey's BBQ that is out in Meridian! The food is great. However, my experience at this particular Dickey's was not good :( First of all, my boyfriend and I walked in and were not even greeted by blank stares from the high school age kids from behind the counter. They were quietly chatting to each other, we didn't even get a glance. We looked at the menu for a minute and then waited for some kind of recognition from the three employees. Didn't get anything until we walked up to be right in front of their faces and said that we were ready. It's not like we were hard to see or anything, we were the only ones in there! We were then informed that the one thing we both wanted, pulled pork, was completely gone for the day. I was surprised that what I would consider to be a popular item was all gone already! They were still going to be open for a few hours. We were then forced to change our minds which wasn't too difficult as we enjoyed all of the items we got when we had visited the Meridian Dickey's a month or so back. The kids kind of fumbled around getting our food and had to ask each other questions like what goes where etc. We were then informed that they were out of rolls (complimentary with your meal), but would be getting some soon and would bring them to us. I've worked in a restaurant before, and I know that this just means "We were too busy chatting to put any bread in the oven," especially as after about 8 or so minutes (just the right time to warm and brown bread in the oven) they brought us a couple rolls. After we got our food I was so sad! :( I was starving and the portions that we received at this location were pitiful. When we had gone to the Meridian location our plates were incredibly heavy and overflowing with food, so much so that I had some for lunch the next day! I think that is how it should be at a BBQ place, but that is just my opinion. :) One more very petty thing was that I love pickles and at the Meridian location we got a whole one and this location on Glenwood I laughed at the two tiny slices we each got. But that is just me being silly. I was told by a few people that I should contact the manager of that location and let him know about my experience but I hate bugging people for things like that, plus, I remember my managers at the restaurant I used to work at and I knew that he or she most likely just would brush it off and continue with their day. What's the point really. :) Just wanted to warn people! In conclusion: If you want Dickey's BBQ, head over to Meridian!

Welp. This was a surprise. I definitely didn't expect this place to be so good... (no offense, Dickies)... but it was pretty impressive. Portion sizes and prices are reasonable, meat is cooked really well and it didn't need any sauce, though the sauce is pretty good. The brisket is my favorite and I love their baked beans, also I've tried both sausages which were yummy. The husband lives for fried okra and bacon green beans so he is usually happy. The casual dining is actually a bonus for me, so don't expect frills. Oh and... Free soft serve ice cream!! :) The only downfall is the service seems a bit frazzled at times. Also you have to figure out how to politely turn down taking home one more of those dang yellow plastic cups!!!! ;) UPDATE: 5/25/2014 -- from 5 star to 4 -- we still really enjoy their food but their customer service seems to get worse and worse each time we visit. I've yet to visit this location without 1) having to repeat my order no less than 3 times because communication between employees is so terrible and lacking, and 2) having them mess up my order, give me the wrong thing with the wrong sauce, or forget things all together (i.e. order a 3 meat plate for the husband, only get 2 meats but pay for all 3)... it's a shame because it makes going here more frustrating than it is worth. We are still customers but not sure got how long unless the ordering process (or employee skill/training/communication) changes.

Eh. It was OK. There are many, many BBQ places that are much better. You can tell this is the fast food version of BBQ. My other half had a half rack of ribs. His review - tough. Not the worst he's ever but nowhere near the best. He thought they might have been old/overcooked. I had the pulled pork. Nothing wrong with it, but not memorable. We had the baked potato casserole, beans, potato salad, and mac & cheese for the sides. The baked potato casserole was barely warm and pretty flavorless, the beans were average, the mac & cheese was doused in Velveeta sauce. The potato salad was actually quite good. I'd say it was the best part of the meal. We tried Dickey's, but no need to go back.

The smokehouse salad is great! Fantastic hickory smoked meat of your choice (I prefer the chopped brisket) cheddar and onion tanglers atop a bed of romaine lettuce. As a regular at the other Treasure Valley locations I've come to expect great friendly service. If your missing any crew members that were at the Overland location come check them out on Glenwood just north of D&B you might just see them. Thanks Damian, JJ, Jenny, et al for another great salad!
